🚨𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 #𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀: 𝗞𝗮𝘆𝗮, 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀 & 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀, 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆.

Today we’re dedicating our #PMWM post to Kaya 👇

Named “America’s Best Friend” & the “Most Powerful Lobbyist on Capitol Hill”, Kaya was an 8-year-old German Shepherd service dog trained to help Veterans with mental health issues. She inspired & helped establish the PAWS Act, a bill signed into law in 2021 that helps fund service dogs for struggling Veterans. Throughout her career, Kaya flew over 250 times to lobby for this historic legislation.

Sadly, she took her last flight on Feb 2nd with @southwestair to her home state of Texas and tragically passed away just a few days later. Kaya’s last flight was captured and has gone viral, accumulating millions of views across social media.

Her handler, Cole Lyle, was diagnosed with PTSD after his deployment to Afghanistan in 2011 with the Marine Corps. He was at a low point in his life and felt like he'd become a veteran suicide statistic, so he adopted Kaya to help with his PTSD symptoms.

To continue Global Strays Pets for Mental Wellbeing Month, we’re highlighting Veterans and the effects pets have on their mental wellbeing.

An estimated 20% of veterans suffer from some type of post-combat mental health challenge, like PTSD. These symptoms can be debilitating and lead to social isolation, and far too often, suicide. The human-animal bond provided by companion and service dogs has the power to improve mental wellbeing and bring comfort and reprieve from suffering.

We reached out to @chronicallypersevering to debunk some myths about Service Dogs for #PMWM! Cienna uses her platform to spread awareness about service dogs and chronic illnesses, and has built an amazing online community that has changed people’s lives.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗮, 𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗶𝗺𝗮:
As a wheelchair user, Cienna uses her 2 service dogs, Piper and Pima, to help perform daily tasks and life-saving services for her. Their responsibilities include helping her during periodic paralysis attacks and alerting her to low blood sugar levels.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼:
🐾 Pull her wheelchair
🐾 Help when she has an allergic reaction, migraines, or can’t breath
🐾 Push accessible door buttons & pick up dropped items
🐾 Perform deep pressure therapy to help regulate her body
🐾 Bring her medications & water
🐾 Find help when needed

For Global Strays’ “Pets for Mental Wellness Month”, @officialminaalali talks about how her pets have helped her mental health!

If you’re a pig lover, you probably recognize her Tiktok-famous pig, Merlin! With almost 2 million social media followers, Mina uses her platform to educate people on how to properly care for pets (especially unique ones like Merlin!) and the importance of prioritizing pets’ health and happiness.

We reached out to Mina for #PMWM because of her beautiful relationship with her companion animals. Mina is also a huge advocate for mental health. Her pets have helped her mental health tremendously through caring for them, receiving their love, and even bonding with them through training. From her beloved bearded dragon, Mochi, to her rats Mademoiselle, Millie, and Miracle, and her pig, Merlin, Mina is the ultimate pet-mom and animal advocate.
