“The next generation are like tender plants. Our role is to provide a forest where positive thinking and animal awareness is cultivated amongst these little plants.”
- Mabia Espinoza, Global Strays

Hi Global Strays Partner,

Let’s be honest: young people often listen to and learn a lot from other young people. That said, who better to educate than the youth themselves.

Access to education is extremely scarce in many of the regions Global Strays serves. For example, the average Nicaraguan receives only 4.6 years of schooling in their lifetime, already less than an elementary education in the United States.

A few weeks ago, Mabia Espinoza of Global Strays, held an educational workshop in Jinotepe, Nicaragua. She invited fourteen adolescents (between ages 13-18) from five communities around her animal shelter. The workshop centered on The 5 Freedoms of Animals, the foundational principles of animal welfare.
Participants broke into small groups, creating artistic expressions of The Five Freedoms. The story from one group, Francis, Maynor, Jema, and Diana, caught Mabia’s attention: two dog brothers, Duke & Bobby, were adopted into two different families. Duke was being neglected, but Bobby received all the needs discussed in the Five Freedoms. Duke could see his mistreated brother Bobby through a fence each day, making him extremely sad. Finally, Bobby’s parents intervened and Duke’s family agreed to allow Duke to go live with Bobby so that he could receive the freedoms he deserved.
At the end of the workshop, in addition to receiving a certificate of completion, each participant made a personal commitment to act as messengers of the Five Freedoms within their own communities. For example, Francis Narváez (seen here with Mabia) promised “to give more love and affection to my pets. I have to dedicate more time to each one and always provide them with water and food. In the same way, I promise to help the animals on the street or the neighbors’ pets however I can. I will also spread the knowledge that Global Strays has taught us.”

Mabia says, “These educational clinics help foster empathy and respect towards animals, so that we can all live in a healthy world. Remember, the way in which you treat animals says a lot about you as a person. Please keep supporting Global Strays, it’s vital that these clinics include an educational aspect.”

We are excited to invite back the same adolescents at the second clinic to find out what they shared with their communities as educational messengers. We are eager for them to learn additional tools to help build a more compassionate world. Your donation today will have an immediate impact; not only for these adolescents, but also help us reach more youth, educating them on the necessary Five Freedoms and empowering them to be ongoing messengers for change in their communities.

Thank you,

Liz Shafiroff & Global Strays
