Hi Global Strays Partner,

As International Women’s History Month comes to an end today, I want to spotlight 5 phenomenal women who are blazing the trail for animal welfare. These women are leaders in their field; innovative, compassionate, fearless, and truly exemplify what it means to “shatter the glass ceiling”.

1. Elizabeth Novogratz
Elizabeth Novogratz is the founding president of Species Unite, a nonprofit media project to help people transition off of animal products. After witnessing inhumane animal agriculture and trade in the U.S. and abroad, she founded Species Unite with a two-fold goal: giving a voice to people who have dedicated their lives to creating a more just world for animals; bringing together the best non-animal products on one curated media platform. She hosts the Species Unite podcast, which uncovers the latest in “future food” (cultivated meat), vegan fashion, and plant-forward meals. By providing easy, accessible, everyday solutions to our over-consumption of animal products, Elizabeth is shifting the mainstream off of animal products and living a more sustainable lifestyle. speciesunite.com

2. Priya Sawhney
Priya Sawhney is the co-founder of Direct Action Everywhere, a grassroots animal rights organization and global network of activists working to achieve revolutionary social and political change for animals in one generation. She made international headlines after being arrested for getting on stage in Las Vegas to confront Jeff Bezos, protesting the poor treatment of chickens at a California farm that supplies chicken and turkey to Amazon. On stage, Priya pleaded to Bezos: “You are the world’s richest man. You’re the president of Amazon, and you can help the animals.”  directactioneverywhere.com

3. Dr. Katherine Polak, DVM
Dr. Polak has an impressive career in animal welfare as a veterinarian, working for some of the most prominent organizations. She’s currently the VP of Companion Animals and Engagement at Humane Society International (HSI), where she works to improve companion animal welfare around the world. Prior to joining HSI, she managed companion animal welfare programs across Asia with FOUR PAWS International, and launched a sterilization program for free-roaming dogs in Bangkok, Thailand with Soi Dog Foundation. Follow her on Instagram.

4. Genesis Butler
Genesis Butler is an environmental and animal rights activist and, at the age of 10, was one of the youngest people to ever give a TEDx talk. After visiting sanctuaries and rescues and seeing their founders experience financial struggles, she made it her goal to help them get funding. Her nonprofit, Genesis for Animals, helps fund sanctuaries and rescues in the U.S. genesisforanimals.org

5. Kimberly Elliott
Kimberly Elliott is the mom to Josh the Doodle, an Instagram famous dog with cerebellar hypoplasia. She founded the Be Like Josh Foundation, a nonprofit that specializes in the study, rescue, rehabilitation, and advocacy of dogs with special needs. Kimberly works to spread the message that all animals (and people!), regardless of disability, are worthy of love. belikejosh.org

This month and every month, let’s celebrate the contributions these women and countless more have made to making the world a kinder, more just place for animals.

Have a great weekend,

Liz
