Hi Global Strays Partner,

Let me tell you the story of how we assembled our squad of Dogs on Wheels. Three little doggies from Nicaragua  - Almendra (Almond), Ollie and Fafi - had all lost their ability to walk, run, play, and enjoy their canine lives. It was heartbreaking.

We tried makeshift wheelchairs before, but the cheap plastic snapped easily. Attempts have also been made to ship the wheelchairs using a courier service. Alas, the wheelchairs were confiscated by border security. The only option, of course, was for Global Strays to organize a covert operation!

K9 Carts built three state-of-the-art wheelchairs thanks to one of our loyal Global Strays donors. Then, a brave volunteer, Julie from Nicavets, hid the wheelchairs in her suitcase as she flew all the way to Nicaragua to deliver them.

When Almendra, code name: “The Flash,” received her wheels, she took off running as fast as lightning. This was the energetic young dog’s first chance to run since she lost her ability to use her hind legs in a car accident. Elisa Quiroz, Program Facilitator at Global Strays and founder of Fundación ADAN, rescued Almendra from these horrid conditions, a scene all too common on the busy streets of Managua, Nicaragua.
Almendra’s friend, Ollie, is another “miracle” dog. He survived not one but two truck accidents. During his recovery, Ollie crawled around with deeply sad eyes and dreaded being left alone. But once Ollie tried on his wheels, you could say he gained a pep in his step! Despite being the slowest of his friends, he has one of the biggest hearts, never shying away from attention and cuddles.
Last but not least, Fafi is the smallest survivor of the three. She was looking for food to bring to her fifteen-day-old puppies when a reckless motorcyclist hit her, fracturing her spine and leaving her unable to care for her pups. Elisa rescued the family, and Fafi’s puppies have since been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and adopted. Fafi is gaining confidence using the wheelchair and looking more like her old self every day.
Elisa said, “I would love to have a flag…[like the one] for go-karts...and put them on the wheelchair, so people know there’s a dog coming!”

Almendra, Ollie and Fafi have yet to be adopted, but they are still enjoying themselves wheeling around Elisa. On a recent beach trip, Elisa said they always looked to her to ask where to go.“They always follow me. They didn’t run by themselves.”

Sponsorship is important for the continued care of these three dogs. Your donation today will provide physical therapy, new beds, and more necessities for Fafi, Almendra and Ollie’s rehabilitation.
