Hi Global Strays Partner,

I hope you’re well during this unique time.

In the past few months we have been able to support our partners in their fight for animals in Latin America. We wanted to update you on our projects in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Colombia. Thank you for your support, it allows us to continue to do this life-saving work.

The beautiful tourist destination of Saona Island is located off the southeastern tip of the Dominican Republic. The island's restaurants depend on tourism, and stray animals survive on their leftovers. Since the start of the pandemic, the strays of Saona have lost their source of food. Global Strays visited Saona Island in early 2020, and we've been invested in their stray population ever since.

We have been working with Collares Rojos since May to bring dog food to the island, designating specific locals to manage the feeding program. In addition to ensuring that the animals are fed during the pandemic, Global Strays is helping spay and neuter (S/N) the local dogs. In May of 2020, 200 pounds of dog food was delivered. Our partners have provided dewormers and tick and flea prevention for all the dogs being fed in Playa Abanico and Mano Juan. Just last week, 32 bags were delivered. Both the feeding and the S/N programs have been instrumental on Saona Island. We have also just started an additional S/N program for stray dogs in the area of Bayahibe, close to the shelter of Collares Rojos. Last week 18 dogs were S/N.

We are happy to announce that thanks to our donors, we have launched a Pet Food Pantry Program for struggling families due to the pandemic in Bogota, Colombia, similar to the one in Nicaragua. Please take a moment to watch this video of Diana Acosta who recently lost her job and received dog food for her rescues: https://youtu.be/Ls2wBIrj2PM

Also, here is a video of Maria https://youtu.be/Lj3nf0LLIbc, a recipient of the Pet Food Pantry Program for her eight dogs, thanking Global Strays from her very humble home in Bogota, Colombia. With continued donor support, we would love to expand and continue to send food donations to struggling families.

Our partners in Nicaragua also have some exciting updates to share! Mabia Espinoza, our partner at Rescatando Huellas, has been able to repair the roof on both the dog and cat shelter thanks to Global Strays’ donation of construction materials and labor costs. Here’s a video of Mabia thanking us for all the help with the new renovations at her shelter: https://youtu.be/jjoCgaqO_aQ.

Beyond these projects, we have also continued to provide monthly food for the dogs and cats at our other partner shelters, including: Fundación Pacto Animal and Albergue Santadercito in Colombia, and Angeles Con Cuatro Patas in Nicaragua (see photo above). Also here’s a video of Elian, one of the caretakers at Albergue Santadercito thanking Global Strays from a delivery in August: https://youtu.be/wiiNv54jsaY

With your help today, we can continue to aid animals impacted by COVID-19, including those on Saona Island, and in many other communities where stray dogs struggle to survive daily. Your help will also sustain our bi-monthly S/N and veterinary care clinics in economically disadvantaged communities, as well as our Pet Food Pantry Program. Our goal is to provide assistance to more animals, families, and communities during COVID-19, but we need your help. Every donation matters in leading a movement towards a more compassionate world for animals, especially during challenging times.

Warmly,

Liz
