Picture this, Global Strays Partner.

It was drizzling outside the day Kathe visited Soacha, Colombia. She was locating a surrendered dog and was nervous to walk through the crime-ridden neighborhood. Among tiny wooden houses stacked side-by-side on the hilly terrain, Kathe discovered the animal tied underneath a house in a space so small she could not imagine any creature could survive so long this way. Kathe has seen many cases like this in her eight years of rescuing dogs: malnourishment, neglect, and abuse. However, it was neither his ribs sticking out, nor the irritated, furless skin that made Kathe lose her composure. The dog’s gaze of undeniable sadness was what ultimately brought Kathe to tears.

As they began their journey to his new home at Fundación Pacto Animal, Kathe’s shelter in rural Bogotá, she witnessed an immediate change in the dog’s temperament. He perked up; wagging his ragged tail slowly but surely. It was as if he knew the pebbled, windy roads of Soacha would lead him down the road to recovery. The dog, who was later named Tobby, seemed hopeful for the first time in a long time. To Kathe, this is what it means to be a rescuer: to see such immeasurable despair in one dog transformed into joy.
Kathe independently opened Fundación Pacto Animal in 2013. In 2017, the shelter was facing permanent closure due to lack of funding when Global Strays came knocking on its door. Since partnering with Global Strays, Kathe has successfully rescued and found homes for over 700 dogs.

In addition to running her rescue shelter, Kathe works for Global Strays as our Program Director in Colombia. She oversees educational workshops for adolescents, our pet food pantry program, and spay/neuter and veterinarian care clinics for pet owners in the neighboring communities.

“Without Global Strays' help, our shelter would not be standing, and we would not be helping so many stray animals and pet owners with their pets in the surrounding community.”

- Kathe

Tobby’s story is not over yet. His recovery has not been an easy task, but thanks to Kathe and your continued support, his life has forever changed since that rainy day in Soacha. Stay tuned for the next chapter in Tobby’s rescue story.

With love,
