This is Carlitos. In Nicaragua, he was found abandoned by his owner, in deplorable conditions: lying motionless on the ground, dying of dehydration and malnourishment, and tick infested - an entire body covered in injuries. 

Tragically, this is all too common for working horses in Nicaragua where most of them never see a veterinarian in their entire life. To make matters worse, Nicaraguan families often rely on these horses to sustain their livelihoods, yet lack the resources to properly care for them. 

One of the things that stuck with me the most on my past trips to Nicaragua were the shocking scenes of working horses. They lined the highways of the Capital city of Managua, jam-packed and squeezed between “bumper to bumper” traffic. Emaciated, entirely depleted, their knees buckling underneath the immense cargo weight crushing their backs, it was a sight you just can’t unsee.

This is Carlitos today. After 6 months of intensive rehabilitative care at our partner shelter in Nicaragua, his health has been fully restored. Carlitos will never go back to his past life. He lives happily in a green pasture where he now has plenty of food and water, finally getting the rest he deserves.
