Hi Global Strays Partner,

You’ve come home after a long day in the office and something seems off. Suddenly, you realize that your back door is ajar. Your thoughts start racing, “Did someone break-in?” Only to realize, your best friend didn’t greet you at the door.

For National Lost Pet Prevention Month, we've prepared a few tips below to ensure you never have to experience that fear.

1. Collar and I.D
Having a collar with an ID tag is essential. Make sure that the collar is on securely but not restrictive and that all of your most recent contact information is available.

2. Be prepared for an emergency
In case of natural disasters or crises, keep your pet’s necessities on hand. This includes food, medication, pet carriers, and all supplies that make leaving home easier. Always keep your pet in mind when making an evacuation plan. For more information on how to prepare your pet for a natural disaster, check out our Instagram post!

3. Keep your pet’s documents updated, organized, and readily available
Keeping a well-organized file for your pet’s documentation can streamline the process of having your pet returned to you. These documents can include proof of ownership and vaccination records.

4. Consider Microchipping
Although collars with an ID tag are important, they can fall off of your pup and get lost. Microchipping is a painless procedure where a small device is implanted under your pet’s skin. When the device is registered with a recovery service, vets and shelters can alert you if your pet has been found.

5. Keep your pet on a leash
Keeping your pet on a leash will protect your pup and any furry friends nearby. Be prepared to leash your pet in a new or busy environment, these situations are especially exciting for a pup.

Losing an animal can be a painful experience. We hope these tips will help you better protect your pet in the future.
