Hi Global Strays Partner,

The intermittent crackle of fireworks throughout the night unsettles most dogs, as you may already know from trying to console your own poor pup on the Fourth of July. To Elisa Quiroz, this is an ordinary night in Managua, Nicaragua. As if it were routine, Elisa turned up some music in her house-turned-animal-rescue to distract the animals from the “ambient” noise. One dog, Niño, even stood up on his hind legs and started dancing with her.
“Last night, my dog wanted to dance, and so I did. I love that,” Elisa said.

Elisa and her mom started the largest shelter in Nicaragua, Fundación ADAN, in their two-bedroom home with the cats, dogs, turtles, birds, and other animals they rescued. Elisa struggled to find time to eat as she balanced her full-time job with cleaning and caring for 30 animals. “I was waking up at 5am to clean the house and was cleaning my mom’s house six times a day.” Everytime she would bring home another rescue, her mother would start to nag about the cleaning. She would remind her mother that the shelter was her mom’s idea.

In 2020, Global Strays bought a bigger home for Elisa to accommodate more rescues. Now, the organization cares for over 250 dogs and cats between two shelters, a sanctuary, and foster homes. Global Strays hired two caretakers, who help Elisa clean and care for all the rescues. Moving to the new house did not only amplify her capacity to care for animals—it also helped her on a personal level. Elisa reflected, “I feel that I have grown a lot and have more confidence. I am better organized with new skills for work and to be the best we can be.”
In addition to running Fundación ADAN, Elisa is a Program Facilitator for Global Strays’ Spay/Neuter and Veterinary Care Clinics. Elisa hopes to expand the Global Strays programs with a mobile clinic to reach families with pets and working animals in remote places. She hopes that donors, like you, will one day make this possible.
 “We are ready! Elisa exclaimed,
All you need is to come with the doctors.”

Your steady support allows us to help Elisa do what she does best: rescue animals.
