I just returned from the Dominican Republic where we met with several organizations that had reached out to us for help. Angela Berges of Rescued by Love RD cares for 119 dogs that live in the front patio of her house. She said that so few local people want to adopt the dogs. "The majority of my dogs come from a very difficult situation," she told me. "A lot of them are disabled from being run over by cars and many of them have special needs." Despite this, they were not fazed by their limitations.
It was great to see that all the dogs got along, and I was completely amazed when Angela told me that she cares for them all alone with no help. You can watch this video below we took at her shelter-
Next we visited Fundación Animales En Vilo. When I entered the tin enclosure to meet Yendy Hernandez at her shelter, I was surrounded by 190 former stray dogs who jumped up to greet me. Here's a peak of what I saw at her shelter:
Yendy Hernandez works three jobs in Santo Domingo to cover the expenses at her shelter of 190 dogs. She hires 1 caretaker who receives a monthly salary of $250 US dollars.
Global Strays is excited to potentially partner with these two organizations. We will keep you posted in the next few months as we finalize our decision.
Warmly,
