Hi Global Strays Partner,

We wanted to share an update on the hurricane response efforts of Global Strays. Our emergency response teams recently returned from the Northern Carribean coast of Nicaragua, where the devastation took place. Make sure to read to the end for an update on our relief efforts thus far in the communities impacted.

Unfortunately, this Monday, a second large Category 4 Hurricane, Iota, made landfall in Nicaragua in most of the same communities that were just hit. Authorities say, back-to-back Hurricane landfalls may cause “one of the worst floods in some of these areas in a thousand years or more.” Families have evacuated and many of the communities most heavily impacted by Hurricane Eta were ravaged by Hurricane Iota.

Our disaster response team needs to be ready to respond immediately to this catastrophic situation and return to the affected communities, so we are asking you to please make a donation today to Global Strays.

UPDATE ON WHAT WE'VE ACCOMPLISHED: After Eta hit, our veterinary team headed by Dr. Tapia spent three days on the ground in the communities of Alamikamba, Él Triunfo, and Palmera. They were the only veterinary group to visit the area. The team provided life-saving care for dogs, cats, pigs, horses, sheep, and chickens. Many horses suffered deep wounds and respiratory diseases that needed to be treated. They removed a massive tumor from a horse, and a cow who had just had a miscarriage needed immediate intravenous fluids. Dogs and cats were given medications and vitamins for anemia and bad skin conditions. One dog needed life-saving surgery. Pigs were very sick with parasites, mange, and anemia.

In just three days, Dr. Tapia’s team treated 955 animals in those communities.

Mabia & Anleika Espinoza delivered pet food to 200 dogs and 44 cats to families with pets in the community of Puerto Cabezas in Bilwi. Please click here to view the entire album of photos from our facilitators delivering pet food to affected families in Bilwi.

Please consider donating now so we can purchase more veterinary supplies and pet food to respond to the second Hurricane as we try to save as many lives as possible. Our team wants to return to the affected areas early next week. Thank you to anyone who has already donated.

Warmly,

Elizabeth Shafiroff
