Hi Global Strays Partner,

I know this is a difficult time for many and hope you are staying safe and healthy. We have some animal news to share with you.

First, contrary to rumors circulating on the topic, there is still ZERO evidence that the new coronavirus strain, SARS-CoV-2, can be spread between humans and their pets. As the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) puts it,  “Infectious disease experts and multiple international and domestic human and animal health organizations agree there is no evidence at this point to indicate that pets spread COVID-19 to other animals, including people.” Further, IDEXX Laboratories, a leading authority in pet healthcare innovation, has been testing thousands of dogs and cats globally in areas with high rates of COVID-19 in the human population. All samples tested for the virus have come back negative. As such, during this time in isolation, we can take comfort knowing that our pets are not carriers of COVID-19. Our companion animals are here to provide us just that, companionship, during these times.

Moreover, the New York Times just released an article reporting that many people are choosing not to spend quarantine alone and are, instead, fostering pets. Animal rescues have seen a major surge in interest in fostering in many cities across the United States. Here in New York City, for example, animal rescues are overwhelmed by the amount of requests they are receiving to foster and even adopt pets. Click here to read more. Although this is good news, shelters are worried they will still see an uptick in pet abandonment if more people continue to lose their jobs. For those in a position to help, we encourage you to do one or more of the following: donate to struggling animal shelters, consider adopting or fostering a new pet, or help out someone in need with their pet.

Lastly, this article provides resources and suggestions to create a preparedness plan that includes your pet. If for any reason you have to relocate due to the virus, please do not leave your pet home alone. Consider a backup plan in advance.

If you have any questions or concerns for any reason about you and your pet, you can always reply to this email directly to chat with me. Wishing you and your family members good health and serenity during this time.

Thank you for being a part of this animal-loving community here at Global Strays.

Warmly,

Elizabeth Shafiroff
