Who remembers Carlitos and his heartbreaking story? 💔

In May 2022, Carlitos was on the brink of death when our partner shelter @rescatandohuellasnicaragua saved him. Swipe ▶️ to see Carlitos on the day he was rescued. Tragically, his story is all too common. Working horses in Nicaragua suffer from a horrible life of mistreatment and neglect.

Now, over a year later, Carlitos is healthier and happier than ever. Global Strays made sure he got life saving medical care and we continue to financially support him to this day, ensuring he gets the happily ever after he deserves.

We hope living on a peaceful green pasture, receiving all the love and care from our team, has healed his heart and soul from the abuse he suffered in the past.

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 5️⃣ 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞-𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 👇

Basic animal care is a 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘸 concept in Liberia, Africa. Our partner, @liberiaanimalwelfare , is teaching thousands of students how to properly care for pets for the 1st time in their lives. These lessons may seem surprising, but they’re life-changing for Liberian kids and their pets.

𝟏. 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 🐱🚫🧙
The superstition that cats are witches leads to extreme cruelty towards cats. We taught students that cats deserve love and kindness.

𝟐. 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐰𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐬 🥣
Pets eat their food directly off the ground. We taught students that giving their pets bowls for food helps keep them from getting parasites.

𝟑. 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 🥰
Dogs and cats are viewed as wild animals. We taught students that they can have a loving relationship with their pets.

𝟒. 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫 🏠
Pets are normally left outside with no shelter to protect them from harsh weather. We taught students that pets deserve to live comfortably.

𝟓. 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐡 🧼
Washing a dog is uncommon in Liberia. We taught students how to wash a dog (some have never done it before!) and why it keeps their pets healthier.

22 years ago, the twin towers collapsed and more than 300 search and rescue dogs worked tirelessly to find survivors buried in the rubble. Meet just a few of the heroic dogs that saved countless lives. ➡️

𝟏. 𝐑𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫
Riley’s iconic photos of him being transported through Ground Zero became a beacon of hope for millions. He even inspired a study on the long-term effects of search and rescue on the health of canines.

𝟐. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐝
Trakr found the very last survivor, who was trapped in the rubble for 27 hours. Trakr’s offspring, gifted with the same intelligence and bravery, are working as search and rescue dogs to continue their dad’s legacy.

𝟑. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫
Bretagne was only 2 years old when she was called to duty, but she spent her whole life training for search and rescue. She worked 12-hour shifts for 10 days straight to search for survivors. Bretagne passed away in 2016, believed to be the last surviving dog from 9/11.

𝟒. 𝐀𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐝
Apollo was the first rescue dog at Ground Zero. He and his handler arrived only 15 minutes after the towers fell. Apollo worked 18-hour days and almost died from the debris/fire. Before becoming a search and rescue dog, he was one of NYPD’s best police dogs.
